The Reading Ladies Swimming Baths, believed to be the oldest surviving outdoor municipal pool of the Edwardian era, was built to allow women to bathe in privacy. Unheated, it was always for the hardy! Closed by the council in 1974, the building quickly fell into disrepair and demolition beckoned. Since 2000, the local community have campaigned to restore the baths into a community facility and, although funding proved difficult during the recession, a sympathetic new owner has transformed the baths into a stunning, high quality leisure complex, with the baths open to the public once again.
